About the NBMA
The Northwest Biosolids Management Association (NBMA) was formed in May 1987 by representatives of 14 Washington State municipalities and sewer districts.

Board of Directors
The association is guided by an elected board of directors. The board is structured so that each year, approximately one third of the Board are elected to a three-year term. There are 21 director positions total.

  • Provide a regional voice in the Pacific NW for reporting biosolids successes and concerns
  • Inform members, regulators, and the public about current biosolids management issues
  • Participate in development of local, state and federal regulations
  • Present high quality educational opportunities for members, regulators, and the public
  • Promote operating excellence for NBMA member organizations
  • Broaden the use of biosolids products through consideration of stakeholder needs.
  • Collaborate with research institutions to advance the science of biosolids recycling.
  • Increase participation of NBMA members in NBMA-sponsored activities.
Goals Accomplished:
    Awards and Recognition
  • Received a grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency to implement some of the key components of the Stakeholder Vision of the National Biosolids Management Program within EPA Region 10 and encourage its implementation in other EPA regions through collaboration with regional biosolids networks
  • Received a contract from the Washington State Department of Ecology for research activities, workshops for small wastewater treatment facilities and guidance document production.
  • Received a 1994 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Special National Award for the Beneficial Use of Biosolids for "outstanding regional activities that have been very effective in promoting the beneficial use of biosolids."
  • Received an Environmental Excellence Award in 1994 from the Washington State Ecological Commission for "work to improve the relationship between the regulating and regulated communities and educational outreach to users of biosolids and the general public."
    Information and Education
  • The NBMA has developed educational folders, fact sheets, a video, kiosks, public service announcements, a World Wide Web site and a monthly newsletter to share information about biosolids recycling. Members have staffed booths, distributed printed materials, given presentations, attended public meetings and given tours.
  • The Association has sponsored annual conferences, Research Days, Poplar, Watershed and Rangeland Interest Group Days, a forest symposium, an agriculture/technology field day, a public forum, numerous workshops, quarterly meetings, committee meetings and presentations.
