Biosolids Quality Committee

Purpose
The Biosolids Quality Committee (formerly Pretreatment/Source Control) provides information to agencies and the public on ways to achieve cleaner biosolids through process control. The Committee encourages participation of current (active and inactive) and potential members at meetings, conferences, and workshops. It promotes comprehensive program implementation by members to reach the public.

Committee meetings primarily focus on case studies and feature presentations by biosolids quality professionals with specific areas of expertise. The Committee functions as a problem-solving network within the NBMA. Recent presentations have included:

  • The Domestic Sewage Exclusion Act and authority for controlling discharges
  • Industrial wastewater conservation: prevention-oriented case studies and tools for the pretreatment permit writer
  • A local biohazard waste management program
  • Brewery and microbrewery discharge characteristics and treatment plant effects
  • Oil/water separator technology and application
  • Developing an industrial waste discharge permit application
  • The Washington State Department of Ecology permit shell and World Wide Web site
  • Proposed effluent guidelines for metal products and machinery
  • The Washington State Department of Ecology/City of Spokane/Spokane County metals reduction pilot project
  • Determining treatability under the Domestic Sewage Exclusion Provisions of WAC 173-303
